For several years the Jewish community in Las Vegas looked for a partner community to support in Israel. Thanks to the Davis family, a window of opportunity was opened in which warm personal relations were formed between Ramat Hanegev and Laurence and Joan Davis. In 2011, the Davises proposed setting up a scholarship fund for students which would enhance their involvement and active life in the Ramat Hanegev community, in return for a substantial scholarship for higher education.
The Las Vegas community came aboard and, together with the donors, established a steering committee directly involved in awarding scholarships to every council resident (with over two years’ residency) interested in taking part in the project and deemed eligible to do so.
Through the developing ties, a tradition of visits by “Birthright” groups and single visitors from Las Vegas to Ramat Hanegev has begun. The council also fosters ties with the Institute of Desert Studies in Nevada and other professional entities, aimed at strengthening the ties between the communities. This connection contains great potential for further expanding the partnership to include the fields of education, agriculture and tourism.
